Reel Maintenance - Bait Casting Reel

What you needs


(from the left:)
1: Parts cleaner
2: Reel Grease (SHIMANO)
3: Reel Oil (SHIMANO)

*** SHIMANO premium, low viscosity oil and grease spray designed for reels.

4: Zero friction tuning oil


STEPS

Remove the side plate, and apply a few drops of oil to the ball bearings which support the spool shaft.
The lubricate needs to be done after you fish 5-10 times.

WARNING:
Some models from DAIWA and SHIMANO have Grease-in spool-support bearings


Oil:
Better to use thin oil. NEVER use grease, it will affect spool speed.
Wipe spool shaft with a cloth (use a lens cloth for eyeglasses or nonaggressive cotton if you have) .
Wipe off any excess lubricant, dirt.

Never use worn clothing that may have embedded dirt.
Use cotton-tipped swab for tiny dirt.
Clean the inside of the brake drum.


*** Clean and remove the oil and dirt stuck carefully if you use SHIMANO, ABU reel.
The brakes blocks work with its efficiency when they're dry.
Clean the inside of line guide with tissue paper which is twisted into a string.
Use a wire to remove the ball bearing knob.
Apply a few drops of oil.
Remove the level wind worm shaft.
Remove the strong dirt with parts cleaner.


TIP:
Vehicle brake cleaner can remove the stuck dirt.
Scour the parts cleaner with the toothbrush, and apply a few drops of grease.
Clean the inside and remove the dirt and the old oil.
Apply a few drops of grease to all gear.

*** The amount of grease poured has no importance at all. It will merely go away with centrifugal force, if you put too much.


WARNING:
There're some ball bearing there, but do NOT apply the oil because most of reel have grease in bearing structure, the oil will take off the grease and it will cause the problem.
Apply a few drops of grease to make the drug work smoothly.
After each washer is correctly fitted, check again the quality of your work.
The noise will tell you whether you did a good job.
